DataDot Technology Canada is breaking into the powersport market with an anti-theft warranty program underwritten by Aviva, and a partnership with Crime Stoppers aimed at spreading awareness about vehicle theft.
DataDot technology marks just about any asset with a series of microdots suspended in a liquid adhesive, each of which is laser etched with a unique code that gives the item its own “DNA,” and cross references the VIN, HIN or serial number as applicable on all the parts.
Once the unit is marked, all components can be easily identified and police only need to recover one dot to confirm true ownership of any asset or to identify stolen parts.
Dealers can now offer a registration-only program, or a one-year or three-year warranty program to consumers, who are eligible for a pay-out up to $5600 if the marked vehicle is stolen and unrecovered. The program also includes travel benefits that apply if a vehicle is stolen while the consumer is away from home. Through its partnership with Crime Stoppers, DataDot Canada is conducting law enforcement awareness programs across Canada.
Pat Cowman, president of DataDot Technology Canada, calls the system “the most advanced identification system available for protecting a vehicle from theft,” and points out that dealers can use the technology as part of their own loss prevention programs as well as marketing it to customers.
“It protects dealers from the occasional ‘smash and grabs’ that occur, as well as acting as a deterrent for internal thefts, which can account for over 60  percent of losses,” says Cowman. “It can also be used to verify warranty service because dealers can  ensure the parts they are working on are the same ones that came with the powersport product.”
Once applied, DataDots are resistant to most acids, solvents, road salts and heat. The adhesive incorporates a tracer and the dots are read using a simple magnifying reader. Marked vehicles are registered into an international database where a consumers  can check the VIN number or code and find out if the item is stolen or have an item flagged that has been stolen. Police also have full access to the database to trace a marked item to the owner.
The DataDot system makes a strong sell because of proven theft deterrent rates around the world between 70 and 90 percent. “It’s not going to stop the guy who goes on a joy ride,” says Cowman, “but the guy who’s re selling or parting it out won’t touch it, and unlike GPS or alarm systems DataDots cannot be effectively disarmed, disabled or removed.”
Dealers can pre-apply DataDots to big ticket items for theft prevention in the store then transfer the registration at the time of sale as part of the administration or documentation fee package. Dealers currently on the program are experiencing almost 100 percent sales rates, the company also backs the product with sales training and ongoing support. The application process is low cost and offers dealers a lucrative margin.
“It’s a real bread-and-butter program that offers peace of mind for customers and dealers,” says Cowman.
